Integrating Three.js scenes in Angular Applications


Three.js is a very powerful application programming interface to render 2D and 3D objects using the WebGL javascript library in angular apps. Considering the boom in the gaming, 3D printing, and motion graphic industry, Three.js is emerging as a robust visualizing tool for creating animations. We, at Oodles, as an evolving Artificial Intelligence Development Company, present a step-by-step guide to integrating Three.js scenes in Angular applications.

Three.js library mostly uses WebGL graphics technology which directly uses processing resource of graphics card in computer and create animated 2D and 3D objects.




Steps to create 3D objects using three.js and rendering it:


1. Create the object of scene.

    e.g: let cubeScene = new THREE.Scene();


2. Creating the object of camera.

   e.g: let cameraToView = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera( 75, window.innerWidth / window.innerHeight, 0.1, 1000 );


3. Creating the object of WebGLRenderer to render the object, set its dimension and append to DOM.

    e.g: let renderer = new THREE.WebGLRenderer();

           renderer.setSize( window.innerWidth, window.innerHeight );

           document.body.appendChild( renderer.domElement );


4. Creating the object of types of geometry.

    e.g: let cubeGeometry = new THREE.BoxGeometry(5,5,5);


5. Create the object of geometry material

    e.g: let cubeMaterial = new THREE.MeshBasicMaterial({color: 0xffc0cb});


6. Create the object of Mesh to make 3D object of combination of cubeGeometry and cubeMaterial.

    e.g: let cube3D = new THREE.Mesh( cubeGeometry, cubeMaterial );


7. Use scene object to add meshed object.

    e.g: cubeScene.add(cube3D);


8. The requestAnimationFrame() is called every interval that keeps animation going.

    e.g: renderScene() {


                  renderer.render(cubeScene, cameraToView);



One of the speciality about Three.js is that we can use textures on object body. Some of the types of the objects we can create are plane, cube, sphere, cylinder, axes etc. We can rotate, custom animate, zoom, pan, view particular side by zoom effect etc. Most of the hydraulics, gaming organizations are using this technology to build web application. 


To use Three.js in angular using npm package

Run: npm install three --save


We can import three.js from th three.module.js file into our .ts or .js file by referring to the three package:

e.g: import * as THREE from 'three';
